Rate-A-Record – Bubbly

26 Jul

An exercise in viral promotion, Colbie Caillat’s Bubbly garnered millions of plays on her MySpace before recently being released on her Coco CD. The daughter of record producer Ken Caillat who produced Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Tusk albums, Colbie hails from Malibu, California.

Give me your opinion of the song and the video….

Like the music, like her voice, hate the lyrics. Doesn’t seem to be any depth to lyrics and rhyming seems to be forced. I’m sure I’m not part of her target audience – so maybe it’s the perfect lyrics for young girls.

Also listened to The Little Things and had same impression. Kind of an immature Kelly Clarkson type pf song.

I heard this song on the radio for the first time the other day and I enjoyed it. I do think she sounds like a lot of other artists today though, not sure if she will stand out.

As for the video, it was fine. Not offensive, not overly memorable. Maybe if they showed more of that cute guy she’s singing about, that would have piqued my interest more! ;-)

Are we still supposed to use the 5 point scale? If so… I’ll give the song a 3, the video a 4 and her voice a 5.

I really like her voice and think it has potential to be very powerful and emotive. The song is pleasant, but the melody is sooooo repetetive. I think I actually liked the song better by virtue of hearing it along with the video. If I had heard it on the radio I might have rated it lower.

I loved the muted colors and romantic feel of the video. It was very soothing. It actually looked like a commercial for Levi’s. Did anyone else think Colbie looked like Jennifer Aniston in a few frames of the video?

brc – yes! I saw Jennifer Anniston in there too! Maybe that’s why they kept focusing so close on her mouth – I think it is her smile that is similar.

Sorry haven’t had time to come and play lately – you always have such neat things up

wanted to make sure you knew about this Stax special PBS is doing next week – says August 1st but find it’s good to check local listings for them – – Tricia from NESP heard it on NPR today

Me, I’m at a loss to understand the numbers reflected in the MySpace profile views and song counts. Like DD I heard this first through Lefsetz – how are others hearing about it? It’s crazy. I find it bland and totally forgettable – oh it’s fairly ok while it’s on but after it’s over I don’t remember hearing it.

Yes, Lefsetz is very high on young Colbie, indeed.

Gray, you may be right concerning the “plays” on MySpace. The player lists over 15 million yet the songs on their now are only 143,000 and 4.7 views to her profile.

She is on the AOL Breakers contest and was the free iTunes single last week, so I’m betting that she’s getting some attention from the tweens and teens still on summer break who are texting and talking on the cellphone at all hours of the night.

More to come on my thoughts, later…

I like the song and video ok. I don’t find it completely forgettable. I remember the tingle my goes, crinkle my nose lyrics which made me smile.

I’m with Gray on this — she’s model/movie star attractive, and inoffensive. But it’s bland and undistinctive to my ears, and in the same vein Corinne Bailey Rae is a lot more interesting.

Thanks so much for the tip on the Stax documentary! There’s bound to be some priceless footage in it that hasn’t been on youtube or elsewhere on the net yet…..
