Are we allowed half stars? If so, I’m going with 2.5. I loved the beginning. I was intrigued by the mandolin. But then I got bored.
The video is really cute though!

I spent quite a bit of time last week going through some of Paul’s later works. I really like Everybody Gonna Dance Tonight but could do without the first part of the video. Melody, beat, and music are great, but lyrics are pretty weak. 4/5 I think End of the End is a much better song.
I posted about these two songs and Jenny Wren from Paul’s Chaos and Creation in the Backyard cd on my blog recently. I think both End of the End and Jenny Wren have better lyrics than Dance Tonight, but I love the beat to Dance Tonight.

I really, really wanted to like this song. I wanted to believe at 65 Paul could still crank it out. Although without Lennon, he never quite hit that high. I believe the entire lyrics for this song is the title, “Everybody lets dance Tonight” -repeated over and over again. The music reminded me of some of the ditty’s I hear on Sesame Street. I’d give it a one. The video however was creative and probably the only reason I made it through the entire song.

I adore Paul McCartney, but this song does absolutely nothing for me. I give it a 2. There’s no depth or dimension to the song. I agree with jenfera that the mandolin is interesting, but otherwise the lyrics and the tune are rather repetetive and boring… IMHO.
I don’t care much for the video either (though the part with the postman is cute).

It feels rather like treason but there really isn’t any saving grace for me in the song.
We have the Rave concert channel on Dish and there are a couple of things of Paul that run from time to time so am used to the “older version” and it’s not that. It just isn’t a very good song which undoubtedly means it will play a dozen times a day on Top 40 radio.
Has anyone else checked out Neil Diamond’s last release btw ??

OK, I’ll be in the minority here: in my mind, there is a place for a little feel-good, toe-tickling, catchy summer ditty — especially with mandolin.
I do understand the disappointment. “Dance Tonight” is a toss-off that can’t compare to most Beatle songs Paul co-wrote (including those I posted above.) Or some of his best solo tunes, like “Maybe I’m Amazed.”
But y’know, I find myself humming “Dance Tonight,” and smiling at its child-like hook. (Remember, Maccers now has a little daughter.) And so I’m willing to give the old boy a pass on this one — and admire his fantastic positive attitude and fortitude.

Colette I think you’re being generous. Even the way you said you’d be willing “to give him a pass” suggests that you don’t think it’s a very good song. What is your honest rating on MM’s 1 to 5 scale?
I just listened to it for a third time to see if it would grow on me… it didn’t. I appreciate the “feel-good” nature of the song, and I like the uniqueness of the mandolin, but overall it’s boring. I mean the whole song is chorus, and the majority of the chorus is the same note!
On a positive note, I did notice an interesting instrumental segment there in the middle of the song that I didn’t notice the first time.

But I think for me now there are two 1-5 scales: the rational critical standard, which I spend much of my life applying to everything around me (especially things I am so immersed in, like music), and the whatever-feels-good scale, which becomes
On the latter, “Dance Tonight” is about a 4 for me.
Your standards and criticism are entirely legit, and I mean that sincerely. but I can just turn off my mind and enjoy this song, on a much more stupid level!

Colette I see your point. I think the “whatever feels-good” rating is a fair way to judge the song. In the end, isn’t the whole point of any art form to make people feel something?
