Matt Wertz is hot. And I’m grateful there is a Ben Harper. First saw him at a music festival about 10 years ago, no one knew who he was and played wonderful acoustic steel guitar and sang such deep songs. Here’s one of my favorites from that set — “Don’t Take That Attitude to Your Grave”:

You say : “What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine too!”
Now you’ve got more than you can spend, but all of the money in the whole wide world is not gonna help you in the end.

Now, while there’s still time to be saved, don’t take that attitude to your grave.
Might be too late for you, I’m afraid.
So, don’t take that attitude to your grave.
    Don’t you take it there?

I hear helicopters over my house every day.
Shining their lights and flying low, treat a child like a criminal from the day that he is born.
You’re gonna reap just what you sow.

Now while there’s still time to be saved, don’t take that attitude to your grave
Might be too late for you I’m afraid.
So, don’t take that attitude to your grave.
    Don’t you take it there?

So you can move your court case, way across town.
You can move it across the whole wide globe but it ain’t gonna help your court case, up in the sky, when you go to put on your white robe.

Now while there’s still time to be saved, don’t take that attitude to your grave
Might be too late for you I’m afraid.
So, don’t take that attitude to your grave.
    Don’t you take it there?

You dare the children to stay off of drugs, now I dare you to stop letting them in.
And how dare you point your finger at a gang out on the street while it’s you who is committing the sin.

Now while there’s still time to be saved, don’t take that attitude to your grave
Might be too late for you I’m afraid.
So, don’t take that attitude to your grave.
    Don’t you take it there?
    They don’t want it there.
You know your mother taught you better.
Don’t take that attitude to your grave.

I am loving Annie Lennox’s new CD – Songs of Mass Destruction. Has everyone heard about the song Sing? It is a call to action to end AIDS in South Africa, and features a rather extraordinary “Choir of 23” featuring Anastacia, Bonnie Raitt, Celine Dion, Dido, Faith Hill, Fegie, Gladys Knight, Joss Stone, and Madonna among others. Madonna’s voice is the only one of the chorus that really stands out.

Happy Friday everyone. MM, I came across this song yesterday and was wondering if you knew it. I think it’s really beautiful and have always wondered why no one ever re-recorded it. It would be really good performed by a female artist.

Kenny Rogers – Sweet Music Man

Don’t worry shrew, it’s not twangy.

Oh yes, LD….I used to be a huge “He who shall remain nameless” fan as a youngster and Sweet Music Man was a favorite. I particularly liked his duets with the late Dottie West….like Every Time Two Fools Collide.

I thought his recent Buy Me a Rose was pretty decent, but I can’t get passed his Michael Jackson makeover.

Jen — I don’t hear all those voices on that record.

Here is a link to more information about the song on MSNBC. From there, there is also a link to see the official video. None of the other women are in the video.

Hi — I posted this on the previous thread, but because some of you may have already read that I’m just repeating the basics here, for fellow Aretha fans:

I’d like to recommend a wonderful disc that just came out:

“Rare & Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul” (Rhino)

Lordy lordy! No “Respect” (she did that definitely before), but some very amazing second takes and covers. Aretha singing “My Way!” And “My Cup Runneth Over With Love!” A must for any devotee.

Also out is a new album of her duets with other folk, and a disc of a live concert in her prime which I haven’t heard yet (”Oh Me Oh My: Aretha Live in Philly” also on Rhino).
