Knockout? No so fast….

21 May

Simon Cowell delivered the script with perfect timing. “David, you came out here tonight to win. And, what we have witnessed is a knockout”, after Little Davie Chimichanga delivered his saccharin version of Lennon’s Imagine.

I’ve told you guys since the beginning that the pint-sized balladeer was Idol’s choice for unfettered commercialism this year. However, I am still amazed at the disingenuousness that the “judges” and producers display in trying to manipulate the public into crowning their designee. Yet, the only time their “pick” has really ever won was Carrie Underwood, and maybe Jordin Sparks but I don’t think ANYONE really cared about that one.

Well, even American Idol fans are not as naive as the establishment thinks they are. Usually, the winner is chosen in the spirit of WHAT THE FANS think the contest is….to choose the singer they like the best. Yes, they will be talented but may not be the best technical singer. If someone gives off a vibe of insincerity or being contrived, they are toast. The fans simply won’t vote for that contestant or will actually vote against that contestant.

Cue DialIdol.com. DialIdol was established a few years ago to measure the voting on American Idol and basically predict who will be voted off by measuring call ins through your modem using their free software. It boasts a 91% accuracy rate and has never been wrong in the finals pick.

And, the results for this year’s final are in.

Surprise, Surprise. Also, here is DialIdol’s commentary on the vote:

Let’s be clear – DialIdol is definitively predicting that David Cook will win American Idol. No ifs, ands or buts about it. No crazy margin of error claims or anything. The DialIdol scores are significantly different enough to wash all that out the window.

This comes as a bit of a surprise to me given that David Archuleta “knocked out” David Cook during the performance show so before you decide to skip the results show tonight you might want to consider that I myself will be watching with the usual uncertain anticipation that has become habit for me!

As you can see, David Cook is predicted to win by one of the largest margins ever. More than Carrie over Bo, more than Taylor over Kat, and more than Jordin over Blake. So, all of that over-pimping by Randy and Simon (Paula was actually subdued), will provide yet another “eat crow” moment for the great AI powers that be.

How now will they backtrack on Simon’s “knockout” remark, much less Randy’s seizure about how Archuleta is “what this contest is all about. Finding the best singer. And the best singer from Season 7 is right there.” Now, what do they do with their American Idol, David Cook? Haven’t they now cheapened his win. Was that their intention? I think the dwindling viewing public has tired of “the game”.

You see, the guys just don’t get that contestants like David Archuleta do not win fans over the competition. He’s very narrow in his scope of performances and attracts a certain kind of fan. He absolutely repulses alot of other fans who will vote for anyone but him. Therefore, once David Cook made it to the finals, he basically won because all of Jason, Syesha, Carly, and Brooke’s fans are voting for him.

Regardless, I stand by my contention that American Idol has “jumped the shark“. I read an article yesterday that producers are already looking for ways to “spice it up” and bring some new twists to the show. Look for Simon to show up to the auditions in Fonzie’s jacket.

The death knell is ringing….loudly.

If AI was a game show, could they still get away with this blatant manipulation? I’m wondering if the relatively new genre of “reality show” was created to get around game show regulations.

What would this show be like if all contestants had an equal chance based on their performances without manipulation by the producers. If every action was examined to be scrupulously fair?

    Would we still watch it?

Huck, I have pondered that question. And yes, I think more people would actually watch it. Alot of people watch “Dancing with the Stars” and that show really has no “favorites” by the judges. From what I have seen of it, the judges really are focused on the performances and are fair.

Having said that, it would be interesting to have just a host and the performers…let the people vote and then on the RESULTS show, have credible judges give their opinions as to what went right or wrong. That way, there is no manipulation for votes and the singers still get the feedback. For AI to survive, I think they will have to do something with the judge situation.

I would be much more likely to watch if it was a fair competition.
As it is, they lost me this year for the first time. I stopped watching at the top 8 or 9 show.

If they “spice it up” by letting us see real talent they can win me back. Otherwise… fugedaboutit.

I’d like to add that if they decide to keep the judging format I would like to see new people. These three have exhausted their vocabulary and I tired of hearing the same drivel every week from the same people in the same order.

Cook is better than what he performed last night. Do you think he might have tried throw it?

Watch what you wish for…they could incorporate some other 19e judges from other shows:

    Peirs

    or
    Hot Tamle Train

However…if they want an honest judge.

Or possibl;e becasue he thought that he had everyone else’s vote? I don’t know. We’ll see tonight.

I don’t think Cookie threw anything. I think he just tried to relax a little and not overdo it. As long as he didn’t look desparate, I think he knows he has the win. Competitors never “throw” anything…they just can’t…against their DNA. By nature of being there, they are all competitors.

DialIdol is ko-RECK. Cookie is the Champ…AI can read ’em and weep.

And, Shrew…you know that there is only ONE TRUE JUDGE.

OMG…the biggest star in the world…George Michael?

    Really?

    Really?

BTW, I’d like to drop kick Piers.

And the George Michael thing shows just how out of touch Nigel and crew are. Biggest star in the world. ((rolls eyes…hard))

Even the “stars” don’t see Idol as advancing their careers anymore. That should tell you something. I’m still giving 2-1 odds that Taylor Hicks does not make an appearance tonight, neither live nor taped.

Geesh! George Michael? Really? I mean, I’m all for a little George Michael now and then…loved his version of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” with Elton, but…
Hey!!!! No WONDER they had Archie sing that song!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sets him up for the duet thing. Contrived!
Well now…as far as Taylor showing up tonight? He’ll be watching with his feet up on a cozy couch somewhere, drinking sweet tea and eating BBQ ribs…in a grubby t-shirt…that says “FAI”.

Hey KD…does the back of the t-shirt say “Hello, Great White Way”?

I think wrestling would have been a more appropriate analogy than boxing for the final. But even wrestling had to admit it was fake and scripted. Shouldn’t AI have to do the same?

    No…the back says, “Fthedoubters…SOULPATROL!”

Well, it’s confirmed. Al.com’s Mary Calurso reports today that Taylor will not be a part of the finale tonight as he is on a “vacation with gigs” in Italy.

Therefore, I think the back of the shirts says, “Ciao, suckers.”

Interesting how he planned a vacation/gig the same week as the AI finale. Coincidence? Heh.

Oh, and Taylor predicts that David will win. Clevah.

ZZ Top? NOOOOOOOOO. Say it ain’t so Dusty.

So the only “surprise” left is what the Dead Elvis video will be…

    Maybe this

Ok, thought you were kidding, but based on the spoilers from MJ, there WILL be another “Dead Elvis” vid, with multiple people. I’m beginning to sweat that it actually will BE Sir Paul, Ringo and the dead Paul and John.

    http://mjsbigblog.com/season-7-finale-spoilers.htm

UPDATE: TMZ reports that the Dead Elvis vid is actually a halogram version of Gladys Knight doing “Midnight Train to Georgia” with Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey, Jr. as “the Pips”.

    http://www.tmz.com/2008/05/21/idol-pips-out-iron-man/

    Why?

Also, all of the major media have bought into the propaganda that Archuleta is the victor. I suppose Idol is trying to set up Cookie’s win as THE SHOCKAH! DialIdol does not lie, folks. If, Archuleta is crowned tonight, there is a BIG, FAT rat. Perhaps it’s the controversy Idol needs to draw attention back to it?

Contrived controversy = Jump. The. Shark.

Per MJ -“Tonight’s “Dead Elvis” virtual reality video features people who are very much alive, according to TMZ: “The finale will include a virtual hologram of Gladys Knight singing “Midnight Train to Georgia” with Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Downey Jr. singing backup as the Pips.”

    WHY?

Another example of…Just cause you can do it; doesn’t mean you should.

Just think (obviously I am feeling better)…I would love it if the above Dead Elvis is really just a leaked rumor from VFTW…but I fear not.

PS- shouldn’t there be a rule that at least ONE person in the Dead Elvis Vid be…ummm..I don’t know…DEAD?

Don’t kill me, but I thought David A. was better last night, and I think the twerp has real singing talent. I don’t think one needs to hate him, however, to know what a very cool original David C. is — though I too thought he knew what was required for a “TKO” (hate all that crappy boxing imagery), and eased away from it, maybe because at heart he’s a maverick — maybe because he isn’t always the best chooser of songs for the 2-min. treatment.

As for the fix and the judges, that’s not so clear to me. Yup, they got on the Archie bandwagon last night with a vengeance, but the kid threw it down.

I don’t hate Archie, but I honestly don’t think that he was SOOO much better than Cookie last night. I give him the edge on the last song but the other two were the same old stuff he’s been doing all season long. All power ballads. How come the judges never called him out on that?

He’s good like Kat McPhee was good. In a theatrical music sort of way. Personally, not my taste and I have to question how commercial he will really be. I also don’t buy the “golly gee” facade from a kid who’s been doing this a long time and who’s used to the “beauty pageant” circuit. The whole stage dad thing just makes me cringe and I think that the judges over-promoted just how good the kid was/is.

Personally, I thought Paris Bennett had substantially more talent than David Archuleta.
I’m a statistics girl and the facts are that DialIdol has Cookie significantly beating Archie. Cookie will win and there will be a public outcry (like when Clay lost) about how the better man lost, etc., because the judges said “knockout”.

Colette I think you raise an interesting point…

I am at a loss on what we are supposed to be judging these kids on:

    1. Best Singer
    2. Most relevant
    3. Best Recording Voice
    4. Best Character
    5. Most Moldable
    6. The night’s performance
    7. The whole season

I think almost all have been presented at one time or another as a viable way to judge. So based on these 7 I would say..

    1. David A.
    2. David C.
    3. I would say this is a tie depending on who produces
    4. Best Character…hmmm I would say for my money Jason Castro (Lord has he made me smile)
    5. David A
    6. David A for predictability, David C for the press it right to radio song
    7. Season? Goes to Cookie…that man had more great moments this season or last season…in fact I would put him number two in the holy moley category.

So by this it is a 3 way split…

Very very fair, Shrew. Though Jason reminded me a little too much of guys I dated back in the Golden Age of Hippiedom.

If you haven’t looked, check out the Ann Powers column on the final two Idols, today in LA Times. She gives both their due.

And MM, of course I’m solidly in DC’s camp like you! He does not need to win this, and since MOR music is pretty dead (no radio formats) you’re right about Archie’s limited commercialism. But I don’t want to damn some candidates for that, because I hate what a factor it is anyway, especially applied to talents like Lakisha and Melinda.

I’m just wishing both big D’s well. And the gee-gosh-golly stuff does not seem entirely fake to me because the kid’s a Mormon from a small Mormon community, he’s got parental handlers who probably monitor his every free moment and yup, even in 2008 there are still kids that square. (My daughter lives in Utah, and she has stories…)

Anyway, here’s hoping DC goes on to record the kind of music we’d love to share on this site!!
