Mission Possible: Beach Blanket Bingo

19 Jun

Ok, peeps.

This weekend begins our summer vacation in beautiful L.A. (Lower Alabama). We’ll be at the beach for 7 lovely days. A time to relax, have some fun and take stock of our lives. Given this objective, I need some music. Can you guys help me to construct a killer playlist for the beach? I hope so.

Simply contemplate this image….

then, give me your best. No limit on the number of songs, particular genres, or artists. Only restriction is time. I need the list by Friday night to add the music to my beach playlist. Here’s a start….

Brown-Eyed Girl, Steel Pulse (Reggae)

Sweet Caroline, Neil Diamond

Red, Red Wine, UB40

The Lion Sleeps Tonight, The Tokens

If It Don’t Matter, Donavon Frakenreiter

I’m In Love, Wilson Pickett

A Beautiful Morning, The Rascals

Fire On The Mountain, The Grateful Dead

But It’s Alright, J J Jackson

Stir It Up, Bob Marley

    D,
You should really have the entire Legend album. Also, it’s the beach…gotta have Kenny Chesney-Boston, Blue Chair, and get nostalgic with Back Where I Come From. Otis- sitting on the dock of the bay. And, of course, don’t leave home without Buffett. But go deep… Tree Top Flyer, Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season, and The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful. And maybe even finish it up with John Denver’s Country Road. Dame Dawn I wish we were coming with you! I guess I will drink an abundant amount of Miller Lite’s here instead. Sorry I’m not savvy enough to put all the links.

My Old School by Steely Dan, because I’m never going back.

Cruel Summer by Bananrama for some 80’s cheese.

Maniac by Michael Sembello. No specific reason.

    Take it Easy – Eagles

Hot in the City – Billy Idol

    (oops, is my age showing?)

    Lovely Day – Bill Withers

    Vacation – The Go-Go’s

Tree Top Flyer — good call, MP. I’m loading up all the Kenny and Jimmy and of course, Otis. Don’t know if I can go John Denver, though.

Wish y’all were coming too. We’ll drink a toast to Mr. B, but it won’t be the same without your Sweet Caroline.

Jen — I think I’m in a Steely Dan mood and Lovely Day is one of my all time favorites.

I actually had written down Vacation and Holiday Road.

    Thanks!

Worrisome Heart by Melody Gardot just because I love it (lazy like the beach). I’m not sure how I heard of Melody – might have been from someone here.

Thanks, Huck. I saw her on your site. I think I’ll download some of her stuff to investigate her further.

Worrisome Heart is a great start…sunset music.

I’m working on half brainpower right now, but can I still play? I gave it some thought while waiting to get my blood test done, and came up with this baker’s dozen.

(My apologies in advance to Shrew for the occasional twang. I plead lightheadedness.)

I Can See Clearly Now, Holly Cole Trio

    One Love, Jason Mraz

    Ain’t No Reason, Brett Dennen

The One Who Loves You The Most, Brett Dennen

Let It Be Me, Rosie Thomas

    Upside Down, Jack Johnson

    I Will, Ben Taylor

Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright, Donavon Frankenreiter

The One I Love, Mike McLellan

Thinking Of You, The Colourfield (hmm … then again, ’80s new wave at the beach??)

    Yellow Bird, Chris Isaak

    Only The Lonely, Chris Isaak

    And finally, The Great Iz

Shrew — Frank (the entire collection)is in residence on my iPod. I’ll likely have Sinatra Day and make up some martinis while there.

Hut — AWESOME!! Thanks. I hadn’t pulled out my Chris Isaak in a while and all the others are great adds.

    Is Jimmy Buffett too cliche?

The music snob in me says yes, but the Cajun partier in me says, “Hell no…we hafta have some Jimmay.” Actually Tin Cup Chalice and A Pirate Looks at 40 are two of my absolute favorite songs to listen to on the beach.

    Jimmy away….

This is definitely cliche – but this is where that picture took me – hey it’s a vacation – serious thoughts should be put on hold :]

Ah yes, cheesy deliciousness. That one usually comes out at the end of the day when most defenses are gone and the singing gets loud…along with I’ve Got Friend in Low Places by Garth Brooks and Sweet Home Alabama.

    It’s a Southern thang.

BTW, I just packed my LSU flag to hang proudly from our sun shelter. So, this will likely be played a few times, as well.

Now I’m confused about where you’re from. Are you aware of Robert Earl Keen? He’s a big fish in a smallish pond, very popular here in Texas. The Road Goes On Forever (and the party never ends) is one of his staples:

I would have given you a link with better acoustics, but this guy needs to be heard live. (He reminds me a lot of TH). This was the only vid I could find of this song live:

Caryl– My favorite Xmas Carol is Merry Christmas from the Family. Hadn’t hear The Road Goes on Forever. Love it. Thanks.

As for where I’m from…I am FROM Louisiana but I live in Alabama, by way of Tennessee.

OK, then, I guess Robert Earl Keen is known outside of Texas. Good for him! BTW, I lived in Lafayette for seven years. We loved it there.

Caryl – I dub thee honorary Cajun for time served.

God’s country. Ain’t nuthin’ like Lafayette, except maybe for the beach…you know, where I’m headed. YEAH!

For the record, I’m technically from Youngsville.

Love Merry Christmas from the Family! Some of his ACL show is on YouTube if anyone wants a sampler.

Now that right there is a song just waiting to be written šŸ˜€

Have a great time – – and be careful of those untamed bar stools!!
