On This Day in Musical History….July 26th

26 Jul

1971:  Mozart born.

1943:  Mick Jagger is born.

1960:  Sam Cooke’s Chain Gang is released

1968:  John Lennon and Paul McCartney complete Hey Jude (arguably the one of the best songs ever written — but then I AM BIASED)

1968:  The Jackson 5 sign a 1-yr. contract with MoTown

1969:  Marilyn McCoo marries Billy Davis, Jr.

1975:  The Hustle, by Van McCoy & The Soul City goes to #1 on the Singles Chart

…man, flashbacks.

1980:  The Rolling Stones hit #1 with Emotional Rescue — it would remain there for seven weeks.

1984:  Prince, or the artist formerly know as Prince, premieres his new movie, Purple Rain

1986:  Peter Gabriel goes to #1 with Sledgehammer — IMO, the BEST rock video ever made.

1992:  MoTowner and originator of My Guy, Mary Wells, dies of cancer

2000:  Napster receives an injunction via the RIAA to refrain from allowing file sharing of RIAA material on their site.  Too bad the genie was already out of the bottle.

    Well, glad you asked….

Not that I’m worried about hits to the blog, but I do want people to be interested and enjoy the site. I’ve been noodling with a few ideas for features and thought that an “On this day” might be fun when I don’t have a specific “issue” to write about.

The new theme comes from me just needing a change and to spruce things up a bit.

I would like to hear any suggestions that readers might have as to what they would like to see on the blog, within reason. After all, this is a hobby and not a job, i.e., I don’t get paid. 🙂

Me likey! Even your little avatar is new groovy. Sweet.

Good call on Sledgehammer. I think I heard a new Peter Gabriel song on the radio the other day – sounded like him, anyway. But I never looked it up later to find out what I heard. It was very modern and dance-y sounding.

I am with you shrewspeaks — I would love to know what made you connect all of these things to July 26th!?. I certainly seems to be one of the most musical event happening days of the 365 days in the year! Is there some special alignment of the planets on this day or what?
Please clue us in and thanks for sharing.

It is a great and informative post.

Hey MM — Love the new template! Much more modern and cheerful!
    Great choice.

BTW what ever happened to the “rate a song” posts?

While I would like to say that there is some cosmic explanation for July 26th and these events, the actual fact is that I’ve been noodling this around in my brain for a while and missed doing it for July 25th. Sorry, no magic for 7/26.

I’ll be doing more of these, maybe even once a week.

brc — haven’t really had any good, new music that I’m interested in rating. However, I do like the idea. There might be one….shortly.

Hey MM. Nice topic. Love the new site layout. Is there still a way to send you a message? I know of a site that would be helpful for this category.
