Oh my…Move over impostors like Winehouse; here is a real soul lady!!!
Emily could go on tour with Bettye tomorrow.

She can sing like blazes and she owns the stage… all America has to do is vote for her!

She’s really good — just wish they’d shut up and let her sing a whole song!
Interesting this, because she’s a lot like my fave LaKisha Jones from AI. But they didn’t share enough of LaKisha’s story with people, a story very much like Emily’s of really struggling to raise kids as a single mom with dignity and grace.
I’m crossing my fingers that this gal and LaKisha will help revive REAL SOUL MUSIC, not the plastic-dance-groove crap.

WOW. That blew me away. I hope she wins, because that’d be some show she’ll put on in Vegas.
It got me thinking, too. I’m wondering how impressed I’d have been if that had been a young performer up there. I think her age and maturity really give a lot of depth to her voice. I’d love to hear her sing some Billie Holiday.

Yeah, a younger singer just can’t deliver that kind of lyric and soul because they haven’t ever LIVED it. I think that much of life’s experiences are acted out up there and to be believable you gotta mean it….to mean it, you have had to experience it.
Even the young Aretha had lived two lifetimes before age 30.

I’m not giving up on LaKisha yet either! Would love to get your feedback on this gospel-ish number, one of the first things heard from her coming record:

What a beautiful voice Emily has! I didn’t keep up with her. Oldies seem to get everyone moving. Awesome!
